SCAD president receives regional leadership award



Savannah College of Art and Design President Paula Wallace (center) and other regional leaders receive Southeast Area 2004 Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Awards at a banquet June 24 at the Grand Hyatt Atlanta Hotel in Buckhead. Other recipients include (left to right) Paul R. Garcia, president and CEO of Global Payments Inc.; Gene D. Carlisle, chairman and CEO of Carlisle Corporation; Joey A. Jacobs, president and CEO of Psychiatric Solutions Inc.; Jim Kegley, president of U.S. Micro Corporation; Wallace, who received the Principled Leadership Entrepreneur of the Year Award; Jay Chaudhry, chairman of CipherTrust Inc.; Daniel P. Amos, chairman and CEO of AFLAC Inc.; and Steve L. Raber, president and CEO of CipherTrust, Inc.

Awards were given in seven categories: financial services, retail and consumer business, health sciences, business and consumer services, principled leadership, technology and lifetime achievement. Winners are now eligible for the National Entrepreneur Of The Year awards, which are designed to honor outstanding owners of fast-growing companies who have demonstrated excellence and extraordinary success in such areas as innovation, financial performance, and personal commitment to their businesses and communities. The national search will culminate at a black-tie awards gala in Palm Springs, Calif., Nov. 20.

Previous Entrepreneur Of The Year award winners have included business leaders suchas Michael Dell of Dell Computer Corporation, Jim McCann of 1-800-Fowers.com, Steve Case of America Online, Howard Schultz of Starbucks Coffee, and Scott Krakens of Juniper Networks.  Last year's national winner was John Mackey, Chairman, CEO and President of Whole Foods Market.

Previous Southeast Area winners include S. Truett Cathy, founder and chairman of Chick-fil-A; Jack Alexander, founder of World Travel Partners; Tom Noonan and Chris Klaus of Internet Security Systems; Charles Loudermilk, founder and chairman of Aaron Rents; Joe Sansone, chairman of Pediatric Services of America; and Herman J. Russell, founder and chairman of H. J. Russell & Company.

The Entrepreneur Of The Year Award program was created and is produced by professional services firm Ernst & Young and sponsored nationally by Microsoft and Kauffman Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership at the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation.  In the Southeast Area, the program is sponsored by Marsh, SunTrust Robinson Humphrey, King & Spalding LLP, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution and Bowne. Recipients of the Entrepreneur Of The Year award become lifetime members of the Entrepreneur Of The Year Hall of Fame.
