President Wallace is the impetus behind many events and activities at the Savannah College of Art and Design. Here are just a few examples. As a co-founder of SCAD, President Wallace is intimately involved in the planning for the college's annual Founders' Day celebration. Each year the Founders' Day awards program offers an opportunity to recognize outstanding staff, faculty and alumni, and to honor a special individual who has made particularly outstanding contributions to the college. At the next Founders' Day in October 2003, the college will celebrate its 25th anniversary. The fall alumni weekend coincides with Founders' Day. Gallery Exhibits The busy galleries department reports directly to the President, who has been a driving force behind the creation of the college's 12 galleries on campus. In 2002, the college hosted 125 rotating exhibits in these spaces. The President also serves as curator for selected local and traveling shows by SCAD students, faculty and alumni. One recent example is "Women by Women," which was first shown in Paris last September. This exhibition exploring women's lives features work in an array of media by SCAD students, alumni and faculty, as well as by nationally acclaimed photographer Joyce Tenneson. "Women by Women" was the inaugural show at savannah, SCAD's gallery space in Atlanta, which opened on April 3, 2003. Savannah Film Festival
The Savannah Film Festival screens full-length features, documentaries and short films. The festival has a global reach, with films coming from as far away as Eastern Europe and Africa. In 2002, SCAD launched a partnership with the Cannes Film Festival Directors' Fortnight (La Quinzaine des Réalisateurs). In addition to screening professional films, the festival also hosts a student film competition, and the Cannes partnership provides several SCAD film and television students the opportunity to show their films at Cannes. The 2003 festival takes place from October 25 to November 1. Sidewalk Arts Festival When the Sidewalk Arts Festival debuted in 1981, President Wallace was among the initial organizers. Since then, the annual festival has become a hallmark of SCAD's celebration of spring. The centerpiece of the festival is a chalk art competition in Savannah's lovely Forsyth Park. The 2004 festival, to be held on April 30, will also include a student and faculty art exhibition, a SCAD student organization fair, food and live performances by area bands. The spring alumni weekend coincides with the festival. For a complete listing of events at SCAD, please consult the online calendar at http://www.scad.edu/calendar. |
